Cuifeng Lake is Taiwan's largest alpine lake, covering about 25 hectares, nestled in a saddle depression at an elevation of 1,840 meters. It is surrounded by beech and Taiwanese red cypress old-growth forest. The water level rises and falls with the seasons, reflecting the forest edge and sky in different hues. There are no restaurants or shops here — only a lakeside trail and occasional drifting mountain mist, making it a place for quiet ecological observation.
Highlights of Cuifeng Lake
Cuifeng Lake falls within Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area. The lake basin formed through geological and drainage conditions of the surrounding terrain — it is not a volcanic crater lake. The water level is higher in summer when rainfall is abundant and drops noticeably in the dry season, so the shoreline scenery varies from month to month. The surrounding vegetation is dominated by Taiwan beech and Taiwan red maple, making this one of the areas with the most concentrated autumn foliage.
The lakeside loop trail is approximately 4.7 km long and takes about 2 to 3 hours to complete. The terrain is fairly level, but some sections can be muddy; watch your footing and wear waterproof shoes after rain. Along the trail you can observe wetland plants, waterbirds, and amphibians; bird activity is most lively in the early morning. Late October to November, when the beeches turn color, is the period most visitors choose to come.
