Dongshan Biyun Temple stands atop Zhentou Mountain and is dedicated to Guanyin Bodhisattva. Founded in the Qing dynasty and rebuilt multiple times, the temple commands sweeping views: on clear days, the Jianan Plain is visible in its entirety. Longan trees are planted in abundance along the mountain road, and Dongshan longan honey is a well-known local product. Every August and September during the harvest season, the longan trees are heavy with fruit and fragrant with blossom.

Highlights of Dongshan Biyun Temple

Biyun Temple sits on the eastern edge of the Jianan Plain, in foothills that are not particularly high but rise sharply enough to afford excellent views. On a clear day, looking out from the temple forecourt, farmland, fish ponds, and urban settlements across the plain are all visible, and on a clear day you can make out the outline of distant mountain ranges. The temple architecture has been renovated multiple times over successive eras, blending construction techniques from different periods. The main hall enshrines Guanyin Bodhisattva, with a constant flow of incense, making the temple an important center of religious worship in Dongshan District.

The mountain road leading up to the temple is lined with dense longan trees, providing excellent shade in summer. Dongshan longan honey is famous throughout Taiwan. Around the harvest period in August and September each year, direct-sales stalls set up along the mountain road selling fresh lychee and honey. Dongshan District also has a notable coffee-growing area, with some farms offering visitor experiences — these can be combined with a visit to Biyun Temple to create a half-day mountain itinerary.
