Zuojhen Fossil Park evolved from the former Zuojhen Fossil Museum, which was upgraded and rebuilt as a full park in 2019. It displays the skull of "Zuozhen Man" — currently the only known human fossil found in Taiwan — as well as Pleistocene mammal fossils unearthed from the Caoliao River valley. The park's new building has received architectural awards, and it combines natural history with local geological culture to form a distinctive science-focused attraction in the Tainan hills.

What to see at Zuojhen Fossil Park

Zuojhen Fossil Park is located in Zuojhen District, Tainan. The Caoliao River valley has long been one of Taiwan's most important sites for fossil discoveries. The Zuozhen Man skull was unearthed in the 1970s and dated to approximately 20,000 to 30,000 years ago, making it the earliest known modern human fossil record in Taiwan and holding a significant place in the study of Taiwan's prehistoric humans. Pleistocene mammal fossils include ancient elephants, ancient deer, and other species, reflecting Taiwan's ecological landscape in geological history.

The expanded fossil park that opened in 2019 employs modern museum exhibition techniques, using immersive spaces to interpret the cultural layers of fossil discovery along the Caoliao River. The new building integrates landscape elements into its design and has received recognition from Taiwan architecture awards. The exhibition uses graphics, specimen displays, and interactive installations to present the context of the fossil discoveries and knowledge of ancient ecosystems, suitable for adults and students with an interest in natural history, as well as families with children.
