📍 Pingtung · Xinyuan Township, Xinyuan Village⛩️ Historic Sites & Temples🔖 Hokkien Clan Temple

The Xinyuan Zheng Clan Temple is the ancestral faith center for Hokkien communities near the mouth of the Gaoping River. The sanheyuan layout is well preserved, and the temple's murals and jiannie ceramic mosaic work are intricate and refined. Xinyuan Township is a representative area of Hokkien cultural settlements in Pingtung County; the clan temple architecture records the process of immigrant clans consolidating after crossing to Taiwan.

Highlights of the Xinyuan Zheng Clan Temple

Xinyuan Township is located on the western bank of the lower Gaoping River. During the Qing dynasty, Hokkien immigrants used this as a base to open up the southern Pingtung Plain. The Zheng clan established the ancestral temple here, using the sanheyuan layout to unite clan sentiment and identity. The temple follows traditional Hokkien architectural proportions; the main hall's lintel is decorated with jiaozhi pottery, and the jiannie mosaic patterns on the flanking wing gables are intricate and elaborate.

The temple enshrines the ancestral tablets of successive generations of the Zheng clan. The tablet format and arrangement reflect traditional Taiwanese clan law concepts. During Qingming, Winter Solstice, and other ancestor veneration festivals, Zheng clan members gather to pay their respects — the moments when the ancestral hall's function is most vivid. Xinyuan Township borders the Gaoping River; the settlement texture around the temple retains the spatial scale of a Hokkien farming and fishing village.
