Wanluan Pork Knuckle Old Street

A century-old Hakka sugarcane-braised tradition — Pingtung's most distinctive culinary street
📍 Pingtung · Wanluan Township · Wanluan Village🎨 Cultural District🔖 Hakka pork knuckle, sugarcane juice soy sauce braising, century-old shops

Wanluan pork knuckle is the most widely recognized symbol of Hakka food culture in Pingtung. The defining element is a braising liquid made with sugarcane juice and soy sauce, slow-cooked for hours until the skin is springy and the meat tender without being greasy, with distinct layers of flavor. The old street is home to multiple shops with over a century of history, each with its own braising formula. It is one of the few places in Taiwan where a single dish has formed an entire old-street culinary landscape.

What to see at Wanluan Pork Knuckle Old Street

Wanluan Township belongs to the Liudui Hakka settlement area. The pork knuckle dish originated from everyday Hakka pickling and braising techniques — originally a durable side dish for busy farming days that gradually became a local specialty. Shops along the old street are densely clustered, and healthy competition keeps each family refining its recipe, resulting in a pleasing range of styles: some lean light and mildly sweet, others have a rich, dark braising sauce. Visitors can compare and choose.

Beyond pork knuckle, Hakka restaurants around the old street also serve traditional Hakka dishes such as ban tiao (flat rice noodles), braised pork belly, and preserved vegetable pork. Wanluan also has the Wanjin Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Taiwan's oldest surviving Catholic church (founded 1861), about a 5-minute drive from the pork knuckle street, making a natural combination for a food-and-heritage itinerary.

How to make the most of your visit

🐷
Try a few shops before committingFlavors vary between shops; buy a small portion to taste and compare before purchasing more. This avoids the disappointment of stocking up on a flavor that turns out not to suit you.
Avoid peak weekend crowdsThe old street gets crowded on weekends, and popular shops may sell out early. A weekday visit or arriving early on a weekend morning gives you more choice.
Add a stop at Wanjin BasilicaTaiwan's oldest surviving Catholic church, built in 1861 and designated a national monument, is about a 5-minute drive from the old street and worth a half-hour visit.
🎁
Take home vacuum-packed pork knuckleMany shops offer vacuum-packed portions to take away; leftovers can be refrigerated, making them a good souvenir. Confirm the recommended storage duration before purchasing.
