Jialeshui Scenic Area is located on the eastern coast of the Hengchun Peninsula and is known for its unusual sea-erosion landforms. The powerful Luoshan wind and Pacific Ocean waves have long eroded the reef rock, forming wave-cut platforms, sea-erosion gullies, honeycomb rock, and various sculptural reef rock landscapes. The park has a reef rock trail running along the coast; the full length offers continuously changing landform scenery and is one of the rare wild coastal natural environments on the Hengchun Peninsula.
Highlights of Jialeshui Scenic Area
The geology of Jialeshui is primarily composed of interbedded sandstone and conglomerate, and years of differential wave erosion have formed a variety of sea-erosion micro-landforms. Honeycomb rock (salt weathering-formed honeycomb-like pits), sea-erosion gullies (longitudinal crevices deepened by wave erosion), and wave-cut platforms (reef tableland smoothed by wave action) are the three most representative landform types. During the Luoshan wind season in autumn and winter (approximately October to March of the following year), the winds here are strong and combined with surging waves the visual impact is most dramatic — though safety precautions are equally important.
The park trail is laid along the coastal reef rock; the total length is several kilometers with moderate elevation changes. Many sections of the trail are close to the edges of sea-erosion gullies; extra caution is required when wave conditions are rough. It is prohibited to cross safety barriers or lean over the edge of reef rocks to photograph. In summer, wave conditions are relatively calm and the trail is more comfortable to walk, but temperatures are high so carry sufficient water. Mobile phone signal is unstable in this area due to the terrain; carry sufficient supplies and inform fellow travelers of your itinerary plan.
