Wangan Beach (Wangankou Beach)

Wang'an Island's mint-green arc-shaped beach; May to October is the green sea turtle nesting protection period
📍 Penghu · Wang'an Township · Wang'an Village🏞️ Nature🔖 Green sea turtle nesting habitat · Mint-green water · Arc-shaped beach

Wangan Beach is located on the southwestern side of Wang'an Island. The shoreline forms a gentle arc, the sand is fine and soft, and the shallow water displays mint-green gradient hues. The beach is about one kilometer long. This beach is also an important green sea turtle nesting habitat in Taiwan: every year from May to October during the nesting protection period, the beach is closed to visitors at night, and daytime visitors must also maintain a certain distance to ensure mother turtles can come ashore and eggs can hatch successfully. The coexistence of ecological conservation and tourism gives this beach a significance beyond its scenery alone.

Highlights of Wangan Beach

The beach faces southwest; in the shallow water zone, reflected off the sandy bottom, the water displays gradient hues from mint green to deep blue — the colors are most saturated on sunny afternoons. The sand is fine-grained; at low tide the beach can be dozens of meters wide and is soft underfoot when walked barefoot. A gently sloping grassy area behind the beach provides some shade. Because Wang'an Island has seen relatively limited tourist development, the beach remains in a natural state with minimal facilities; even at the height of summer the crowds are far smaller than on the large beaches of Magong's main island.

From May to October each year, during the period when green sea turtles come ashore to nest, ropes and notices are set up on the beach, and the beach is completely off-limits to visitors at night. During daytime visits, strictly observe rules such as not crossing inside the rope cordons, not shining flashlights on the sand surface, and not making noise. The Wang'an Township Office operates a green sea turtle conservation station; it is open for public viewing at certain times, displaying measures to protect the nests. Check opening hours in advance if interested. How strictly conservation measures are followed directly affects egg hatching rates — visitors' behavior choices directly impact conservation outcomes.

How to make the most of it

🐢
Respect the green sea turtle protection rulesDuring the May-to-October nesting protection period, the beach is closed at night. During the day, do not cross inside the rope cordons, do not use flash photography, keep noise low, and help protect this important turtle nesting habitat in Taiwan.
🏖️
Mint-green color is most vivid in the afternoonThe beach faces southwest; from 2 to 4 p.m. the sun angle is right and the mint-green hues of the shallow water are most saturated. Before sunset the light warms, making it a good time to photograph the full coastal panorama.
🦺
Check sea conditions before entering the waterThere are no lifeguards on duty at the beach; assess sea conditions yourself before entering the water. Watch for rip currents in summer — it is recommended to stay in the shallow water zone and not swim toward deep water.
🌿
Visit the conservation stationThe Wang'an Township Office's green sea turtle conservation station is open during certain hours and provides conservation information such as nest markers and hatching rates. Call ahead to confirm opening times.

Practical information

Getting there & timing

  • Wang'an Township must be reached by ferry from Magong. Check the Penghu County Government's Transportation and Tourism Bureau or the shipping company's official website for ferry schedules. There are more sailings in peak season; in the off-season sailings are infrequent and return journeys need to be carefully planned.
  • Wang'an Island is a manageable size; renting an electric bicycle or scooter to tour the island works well. Wangan Beach is at the southwestern tip of Wang'an Village, about a 10-minute ride from Wang'an Harbor.

Nearby connections

  • Wang'an Island's main attractions include Tiantai Mountain (the highest point in Wang'an Village) and Huazhai Village (Zhongshe Village). A half-day island loop combining beach, village, and hilltop is easy to plan.
  • There are a limited number of local eateries near Wang'an Harbor; confirm what facilities are available at the pier before boarding. It is safer to bring your own food and drink.
