At the northern tip of Qimei Island, along the coast of Donghu Village, a low reef formation juts out; viewed from a certain elevated angle, the outline of the reef's edge is quite similar to the shape of the Taiwan main island — hence the name 'Little Taiwan.' Just beside it is another reef that locals say resembles Liuqiu Island, which they call 'Little Liuqiu.' This landform is essentially a basalt wave-cut platform; the surrounding intertidal zone forms several tide pools between high and low tides, making this a site on Qimei Island with dual value for geological scenery and ecological observation.
Highlights of Little Taiwan Landform
The core of the Little Taiwan Landform is a relatively flat basalt wave-cut platform that juts seaward from the northern tip of Qimei Island, with waves eroding it on all sides. The columnar joints of the basalt are clearly visible in cross-section on the reef faces; the platform exposes a larger area at low tide, when the shape is most recognizable. The other reef to the west of the main formation is longer and flatter — named 'Little Liuqiu' — and the two reefs side by side at sea make for an interesting visual comparison. The overall landform has been worn by northeast monsoon erosion, giving the rock surfaces a rugged, angular character.
When the tide recedes, several tide pools of varying sizes form around the platform. Sea anemones, sea urchins, various small crustaceans, and reef algae are commonly found inside the pools — a good spot for observing intertidal ecosystems around coral reefs. Note that the rock surfaces are slippery when wet; collecting any organisms is prohibited. To identify the 'Taiwan shape,' you need to stand at a higher point or on a slope to the side of the reef and look down; the effect varies considerably from different angles, so it is worth walking around to compare viewpoints before shooting.
How to make the most of it
Practical information
Getting there & timing
- Qimei Township requires a ferry to reach; check the Penghu County Government or shipping company's official website for schedules. Sailings are more frequent in peak season; in the off-season pay special attention to the time of the last boat.
- The landform is at the northern tip of Donghu Village. After renting a scooter or electric bicycle on the island, follow the road signs — it takes about 10 to 15 minutes to reach.
Nearby connections
- The Little Taiwan Landform, the Twin-Heart Stone Weir (Dingxi Village), and Dashi Longcheng (Zhonghe Village) are all on Qimei Island. Routing from the north coast to the southwest coast makes for the smoothest island loop.
- Donghu Village has local residents who can point you toward attractions; there are also simple drink shops in the village where you can refill your water.
