Shenkeng Old Street rose during the Qing dynasty when Jingmei River shipping was at its peak, with merchant houses clustering along the riverbank. Several Minnan-style red-brick arcade shophouses survive today, making it one of the more intact Qing-era commercial districts in New Taipei City. The old street is famous throughout Taiwan for Shenkeng stinky tofu, with several century-old tofu shops still in operation, giving this cultural settlement its food-centered character as a tourist draw.
What to see at Shenkeng Old Street
The main street is Shenkeng Street, lined on both sides with continuous red-brick arcades. The condition of the traditional Minnan brick buildings varies — some are still in everyday use by residents. Architectural details on the facades include arcade columns, brick-carved window lintels, and Minnan-style gable ends. While strolling, look for the differences between individual buildings — the layers of history are rich.
Stinky tofu is Shenkeng's most recognizable food symbol. Each old shop has its own marinade formula and frying method, resulting in differences in texture and aroma — worth comparing from shop to shop. Beyond deep-fried stinky tofu, tofu-related offerings include spicy hot pot, white tofu, and soy milk, all available throughout the day. Weekend crowds peak during lunch and afternoon tea hours; weekday mornings are relatively quiet.
