Dongyin Sky Crevice

A granite crevice narrow enough to squeeze through sideways — a sea-eroded wonder where you look up and see only a sliver of sky
📍 Matsu · Dongyin Township · Dongyin Island🏞️ Nature🔖 Sea-Eroded Crevice Landform · Sideways Passage · Wave Echo

Dongyin Sky Crevice is an extremely narrow fissure formed by wave erosion between granite cliff walls. The rock faces on both sides are nearly vertical, and the crevice is just wide enough to squeeze through sideways. Standing inside and looking up, only a thin line of sky is visible between the two walls; at the base of the crevice, seawater surges in from between the reefs, and on stormy days the echoing sound reverberates with force. This extreme sea-eroded landform developed particularly where the volcanic rock and granite meet on Dongyin, and is one of the island's most representative geological wonders.

Highlights of Dongyin Sky Crevice

The "sky crevice" landform is formed when waves erode along rock joints (natural fractures) over long periods. When horizontal erosion far outpaces collapse, the fracture deepens without widening, ultimately producing a deep, narrow crevice. Dongyin's sky crevice, because the rock is hard and tightly structured, maintains an extremely narrow state. The crevice walls are perpetually wetted by wave spray, and the rock surface is covered with seaweed and barnacles, displaying a dark-green moist texture.

The experience of standing inside the crevice is extraordinary: your field of vision is compressed to its minimum by the walls on either side; looking up, you see only a strip of sky; looking down, you see the seawater at the base rising and falling with the waves. When waves flood the base, they compress the air and produce a deep resonating sound; when the waves subside, only the faint rippling of the water surface remains. This extreme narrowing and amplification of the senses is something no photograph can substitute for an in-person experience.

How to Make the Most of Your Visit

🧗
Squeeze Through SidewaysThe crevice is extremely narrow — you must turn sideways to pass through. Travel light and leave large backpacks behind, as they may not fit.
👂
Listen to the Wave EchoesThe echo of waves crashing at the base of the crevice is noticeably amplified inside. On stormy days the sound is especially thunderous — sitting quietly and listening is more worthwhile than taking photos.
📷
Photograph the Line of Sky from InsideShooting upward at an angle from inside the crevice, framing the thin line of sky between the two walls, is the most classic composition from this spot. The fine surface details of the crevice walls are also excellent for close-up photography.
⚠️
Watch the Wave Conditions for SafetyThere is seawater at the base of the crevice; on stormy days spray can surge in. Observe conditions before entering, wear non-slip shoes on the wet rock, and do not enter on days of heavy seas.

Practical Information

Getting There and Time Needed

  • To reach Dongyin, take the Taima Ferry or fast ferry from Nangan. Check the latest schedules with the official Taima Ferry service — service may be suspended in bad weather.
  • The sky crevice is located on a coastal section of Dongyin Island. It is recommended to rent a scooter, bring a map, or ask a local to confirm the latest access route, as parts of the path are narrow walking trails.

Nearby Connections

  • The sky crevice is a compact feature — combine it with Lienyu Yijing, Northern Frontier Monument, and other sites as a Dongyin coastal landform theme route.
  • Dongyin's sea-eroded landforms are concentrated at the island's north and south ends. A full island loop can be completed in one to two days.
