Cihu Wetland

A lagoon on Kinmen's north coast — an important wetland habitat for migratory birds
📍 Kinmen · Jinning Township · Cihu🏞️ Nature🔖 Migratory Bird Habitat · Birdwatching · Wetland Ecology

Cihu is a lagoon-type wetland on Kinmen's north coast covering approximately 80 hectares. Each autumn and winter, thousands of migratory birds pass through or overwinter here, with more than 150 species on record. The lake area has birdwatching pavilions and walking trails. It is Kinmen's most important ecological observation site and a rare natural buffer zone beyond the island's military landscapes.

Highlights of Cihu Wetland

Cihu is located on the north side of Guningtou in Jinning Township. The lake area consists of sandbars and lagoon terrain connected to the north coast. Protected by Kinmen's overall low level of development, the vegetation and waterbird habitats remain relatively stable. Aquatic plants and reed beds within the lake area provide migratory birds with conditions for roosting and foraging.

The peak birdwatching season runs from October to March of the following year. Great cormorants, pied avocets, and black-faced spoonbills have all been recorded here, with cormorant gatherings particularly impressive in number. The lake area has interpretation panels introducing identification methods for the main bird species, and the birdwatching pavilions provide a sheltered vantage point that minimizes disturbance to the birds.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Visit

🦅
Autumn and Winter Are Best for BirdwatchingOctober through March is the peak period for migratory birds passing through and overwintering, when both species variety and numbers are far greater than in summer. If your Kinmen itinerary allows, plan your visit during this window.
🔭
Bring BinocularsThe lake surface is wide and identifying species with the naked eye is difficult. Bring your own binoculars or rent a pair from an ecotourism operator; 8×42 binoculars are a good fit for wetland birdwatching.
🌅
Early Morning and Late Afternoon Are Peak Activity TimesMigratory birds are most active when foraging in the morning and returning to roost in the evening. If you want to watch large flocks of cormorants in flight, the hour before sunset is the best time.
🤫
Keep Quiet and Maintain Your Distance from the BirdsThe birdwatching pavilions provide an appropriate viewing distance. Avoid walking close to the lakeshore and flushing the birds. Respecting the habitat environment is the basic principle for maintaining the ecological quality of this site.
