Shuitou Village

A treasury of remittance architecture where Minnan mansions and colonial-style houses stand side by side
📍 Kinmen · Jincheng Township · Shuitou Village⛩️ Historic Sites & Temples🔖 Remittance Architecture · Minnan Western-Style Buildings · Village Preservation

In the early 20th century, villagers from Shuitou went to work in Southeast Asia and returned with capital to build homes. Traditional Minnan swallow-tail ridge houses stand alongside Western-style mansions and colonial-influenced番仔厝 (Banzaicuo) in the same streetscape. This cluster of buildings is not only a tangible expression of family pride but also a spatial record of Kinmen's overseas Chinese history, now designated as an important cultural landscape by Kinmen National Park.

Highlights of Shuitou Village

Shuitou Village is located in the southwest corner of Jincheng Township, near Shuitou Pier. The existing buildings, depending on their construction period and the background of their owners, display three coexisting types: traditional Minnan style, East-meets-West Western-style mansions, and Banzaicuo houses influenced by Southeast Asian colonial architecture. Several buildings are designated Kinmen County historical monuments, including the representative Huang Huihuang Mansion.

The village layout largely retains its original form, with alley proportions and the brick carvings and stucco decorations on building facades relatively well preserved. The national park has installed interpretation panels and a walking route, allowing self-guided tours. Some building interiors are open to the public, where visitors can examine timber roof structures and painted decorative craftsmanship up close.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Visit

🧱
Compare the Three Architectural TypesTraditional Minnan swallow-tail ridges, Western-style buildings with arcaded verandas, and Banzaicuo houses with patterned tiles each have their own distinctive features. Walking along and comparing them with the interpretation panels deepens your understanding.
🔍
Notice the Brick Carving and Stucco DetailsThe brick carving patterns on building gable walls and door lintels reflect the craftsmanship and taste of the era's builders and owners. Some motifs incorporate Southeast Asian elements, making them a window into the fusion of architectural cultures.
🚢
Combine with the Shuitou Pier RouteShuitou Pier is the ferry departure point for Little Kinmen (Lieyu). Scheduling your village visit before or after your boat departure makes good use of waiting time.
🌅
Morning Light Is BestThe alleys in the village are mostly oriented north–south, so morning side-light illuminates the architectural facade details better than flat midday light. A morning visit is recommended for photography.
