The predecessor of Kinmen Cultural Park was the Kinmen Normal School established during the Japanese colonial period. It preserves a complete cluster of Japanese-style dormitory buildings that represent an important sample of Japanese-era educational construction on Kinmen Island. The site has since been transformed into a county-level arts and culture venue hosting occasional exhibitions and cultural events, allowing these old buildings to find new public meaning across different political eras.
Highlights of the cultural park
During the Japanese colonial period (1895–1945), Kinmen was briefly under Japanese administration. During this time Japan built schools and other basic educational facilities on the island, of which the Kinmen Normal School was one. The school's dormitories follow the standard Japanese timber-frame building style, characterized by wooden pillars, wooden floors, sloped-ceiling interiors, and engawa (verandah) corridors. Timber is the primary material, and some buildings retain their original floor plan.
Under its current role as a cultural park, the site regularly hosts art exhibitions, history and culture lectures, and local cultural events, repurposing the historic building spaces for public use. The Japanese dormitory cluster has a quiet atmospheric quality that contrasts with the typical urban environment of Jincheng Township. Beyond the exhibitions themselves, visitors can simply experience the spatial scale and temporal memory of these old buildings.
