Shakadang Trail

A gorge trail carved into the cliff face — walking beside marble riverbeds and multicolored pebbles
📍 Hualien · Xiulin Township · Taroko🏞️ Nature🔖 Gorge Trail · Marble Riverbed · Ecological Walking

Shakadang Trail stretches 4.4 km, carved into the cliff walls along the Shakadang River canyon, and is one of the most popular ecological trails in Taroko National Park. The trail passes through several covered tunnels, and the riverbed below is blanketed in multicolored marble pebbles. The water is clear to the bottom, and the marble grain on both canyon walls displays rich layers of texture in changing light. Before visiting, check the Taroko National Park official website to confirm trail access conditions.

Highlights of Shakadang Trail

"Shakadang" is a Truku word meaning "molars," describing the shape of the rocks in the canyon. The trail entrance is located beside the Taroko Tunnel, and the route follows the Shakadang River closely throughout. The riverbed's marble pebbles have been ground and polished by centuries of water flow, displaying a mosaic of white, gray, brown, and banded colors that shift constantly with the angle of light. The river water, infused with minerals from the rock layers, takes on a distinctive blue-green tint on sunny days.

The trail is rich in wildlife. Formosan macaques, Swinhoe's pheasants, and Emerald tree frogs can sometimes be observed at close range during the early morning and dusk hours. Stalactite formations and moss growth are visible on the cliff walls at covered-tunnel sections where water seeps through. The trail ends at the ruins of the Sanjian House (Three Houses) settlement; a one-way walk takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. You can continue as far as your energy allows or choose your own turnaround point.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Visit

🌅
The Early Morning Is BestEnter the trail before 8 a.m. when light angles down from the top of the canyon to the river surface, bringing out the richest color saturation in the water. Wildlife activity is also higher than during the day.
👟
Wear Non-Slip FootwearSome sections of the trail are wet, and marble surfaces become extremely slippery when damp. Wear sports shoes or hiking boots with good traction — avoid sandals or flat-soled shoes.
🔍
Look Down at the Riverbed PebblesFrom safe riverside viewpoints, lean over or crouch down to examine the multicolored pebbles on the riverbed. Trying to identify individual rock types and color variations is one of the most engaging small-detail experiences on the trail.
🤫
Move Quietly to Increase Wildlife EncountersLower your voice, slow your pace, and pause at trail bends or shaded sections to wait and watch. You'll have a better chance of spotting Formosan macaques or river birds at close range.
