Shihtiping

Taiwan's most complete pothole landscape and a whale- and dolphin-watching zone on the East Coast
📍 Hualien · Fengbin Township · Shihtiping Road🏞️ Nature🔖 Pothole Topography · Wave-Cut Platform · Whale and Dolphin Watching · East Coast

Shihtiping lies on the eastern side of the Coastal Range in Fengbin Township, composed of raised coral reef, wave-cut platforms, and rocky reefs. Its pothole topography is considered the most intact example in Taiwan. The clear East Coast waters are one of eastern Taiwan's most important whale- and dolphin-watching zones. The site has trails and a camping area, and is the most representative attraction on Hualien's East Coast for both geological and marine ecology.

Highlights of Shihtiping

The pothole topography at Shihtiping is formed when fast-moving currents carry sand and gravel in a rotational grinding motion against bedrock over a long period, creating rounded depressions of varying sizes across the rock surface. At high tide, seawater fills the potholes to form natural pools. The coral reef here was lifted above sea level by crustal uplift, forming wave-cut platforms; together with the pothole terrain, these create a coastal landscape that reads like a geology textbook. The scale is the finest in Taiwan.

The waters off Shihtiping lie along the Kuroshio Current, rich in plankton and supporting multiple species of cetaceans including bottlenose dolphins, spinner dolphins, and Bryde's whales. Whale-watching operators at Shihtiping Harbor offer excursion services (mainly April to October). Trails run along the coral reef shoreline for close-up observation of the potholes and intertidal organisms, with sweeping Pacific Ocean views throughout.

How to Make the Most of Your Visit

🕳️
Pothole Trail Geological ObservationThe trail follows the distribution of bedrock potholes; examine the round depressions of varying sizes. The water-pool effect is most visible at high tide. Avoid stepping on the edges of the potholes.
🐬
Whale and Dolphin Watching Excursion (April–October)Operators at Shihtiping Harbor offer boat trips; sea conditions are more stable during peak season (April to October). Book ahead; trips last approximately 2 to 3 hours.
Seaside Camping ExperienceShihtiping has a camping area where visitors can pitch a tent beside the Pacific, falling asleep to the sound of waves. Reserve a campsite with the management authority before arriving.
🐠
Intertidal Zone Ecology ObservationAt low tide the coral reef platform is exposed, allowing observation of starfish, fiddler crabs, shellfish, and other intertidal organisms. Do not capture or disturb the ecology.

Practical Information

Getting There & Time

  • Shihtiping is on Provincial Highway 11 (the coastal highway), approximately 80 kilometers south of Hualien City. Driving time is roughly 1.5 to 2 hours; follow signs along Highway 11.
  • The trail is open year-round. The whale-watching season is April to October; camping requires advance reservation through the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration.
  • The rock platform trail can be slippery — wear non-slip sandals or athletic shoes. Do not walk barefoot on the reef, to avoid cuts.

Nearby Connections

  • Heading north along Provincial Highway 11, you reach the Xinshe Terraced Coastline in Fengbin Township; heading south connects to Changhong Bridge and the Xiuguluan River rafting endpoint for an East Coast itinerary.
  • Shihtiping Harbor has an early morning fish market; you can watch fishing boats return to port at dawn and purchase fresh seafood.
