On the cycling path beside Yuli Bridge, a monument marks the location of the suture zone between the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate on land — allowing visitors to stand directly on the boundary between the two great plates. This is one of only a few places in the world where a plate boundary can be clearly marked and physically reached on land. The Xiuguluan River flows through this geological section as well, giving the site exceptional geological significance.
Highlights of the Yuli Tectonic Plate Suture Zone Monument
Taiwan's formation results from tens of millions of years of collision and compression between the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate. The Hualien-Taitung Rift Valley is precisely where the suture zone of these two plates surfaces at ground level. Geological surveys have confirmed that a section of the Xiuguluan River near Yuli Bridge is one of the locations where the plate suture zone passes. The monument stands on the cycling path next to the bridge, with geological interpretation boards nearby explaining in text and illustration the relationship between plate tectonics and the formation of Taiwan's terrain.
What makes this site special is that most tectonic suture zones worldwide lie on the ocean floor or deep in remote mountains, making them essentially inaccessible for a direct, personal encounter. This monument in Yuli allows anyone to walk up, stand on the plate boundary, and take a photograph. The surrounding Xiuguluan River valley terrain, shaped by plate compression into a distinctive landform, is made more meaningful with the help of the interpretation boards.
