Opened in 2006, the Chiayi County Performing Arts Center is the largest modern theater facility in Chiayi County, housing a 1,500-seat grand theater and a 300-seat black box theater. The building's exterior incorporates jiaozhi ceramic art — the emblematic local craft of Chiayi — with brightly colored ceramic sculptures adorning the facade, blending regional cultural identity with contemporary architectural aesthetics.

Highlights of the Chiayi County Performing Arts Center

The Performing Arts Center is located on Xianghe 1st Road in Taipao City, close to the Chiayi County Government and the Taiwan High Speed Rail Chiayi Station, making it conveniently accessible. From the jiaozhi ceramic bas-reliefs on the exterior to the professional stage equipment inside, the grand theater can host large-scale operas, ballet companies, and symphony orchestras, while the black box theater is suited for experimental theater and chamber music concerts. Since opening, the venue has hosted numerous domestic and international performance groups.

Jiaozhi ceramic is a traditional Chiayi craft known for its low-temperature colored glaze firing, historically used mainly for temple decoration. The performing arts center's exterior wall employs this craft, integrating local traditional craftsmanship into a public building and giving this modern venue a distinctively local character. The plaza outside the building features art installations, and small markets or exhibitions are sometimes held before and after performances — worth checking the official event announcements.
