Built in 1905, Huwei Iron Bridge spans Huwei Creek at a total length of about 270 meters. It served Taiwan's sugar railway system on a 762-mm narrow gauge for more than half a century. It is the longest surviving sugar rail bridge in Taiwan. The steel truss structure is well preserved; the deck has been restored and opened to pedestrians, and the sight of the bridge's shadow reflected on Huwei Creek at dusk has become the defining image of Huwei.

Highlights of Huwei Iron Bridge

The bridge was built to carry the sugar railway, transporting sugarcane from the fields via narrow-gauge tracks to Huwei Sugar Factory — a key piece of transport infrastructure in the era of agricultural industrialization. The steel truss was built using early Japanese-era engineering methods; the piers were constructed with cut stone, visibly different from later reinforced concrete techniques, reflecting the technical context of its construction period.

Walking the deck, you can look down from the railing at Huwei Creek's channel — in the dry season the gravel riverbed opens wide; in the rainy season the water flows calmly. When the setting sun angles in from the west, the bridge casts a shadow onto the water below, drawing photographers. Interpretation panels beside the bridge record the sugar railway history; combined with a visit to Huwei Sugar Factory, they form a complete understanding of the sugar industry.

How to make the most of your visit

🌅
Arrive half an hour before sunsetThe combination of side light on the bridge and the reflection on the water is best just before sunset. Arriving thirty to forty minutes before sundown lets you watch the light evolve.
🚶
Walk the full bridge lengthA return walk over the full bridge takes about fifteen to twenty minutes. Walking the span lets you sense the narrowness of the sugar rail gauge and the historic scale of the crossing.
📖
Pair with the sugar factory for contextThe iron bridge and Huwei Sugar Factory are one story. Visit the factory first to understand the sugar production process, then see the bridge and appreciate its role in the sugar transport chain.
🎣
Observe the creek ecosystemDuring dry season the creekbed is wide and open; you can approach the riverbank below the bridge and observe gravel-bar plants and water birds. During the summer–autumn wet season, watch the water level and stay away from the bank.
