Baoan Temple

A 1742 Dalongdong temple, Pan Lishui's murals honored by UNESCO
📍 Taipei · Datong District · Hami Street⛩️ Historic Sites & Temples🔖 Temple murals

Baoan Temple was founded in 1742 and is dedicated to Baosheng Dadi. It is the spiritual anchor of the Dalongdong neighborhood. The historic temple architecture is well preserved, and the murals in the front hall (sanquan dian) and main hall were painted by renowned craftsman Pan Lishui. The restoration project received a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation, making this one of the most artistically significant temple cases in Taipei.

Highlights of Baoan Temple

Baoan Temple's architectural layout follows the traditional three-hall temple format. The sanquan dian (front hall) retains intact door-god murals and stone-carved decorations. The most celebrated works inside the temple are the wall murals and door-god paintings by Pan Lishui, depicting folk stories and historical legends with fine brushwork and colors that remain in good condition. The temple conducts periodic restoration work prioritizing traditional techniques to avoid overlaying historical surfaces with modern materials.

The Dalongdong neighborhood where Baoan Temple stands was an important literary and educational community in Qing-dynasty Taipei. Taipei Confucius Temple is adjacent, roughly a 5-minute walk. The temple hosts the Baosheng Cultural Festival each year, presenting traditional formation parades and folk performance arts, typically held in the third or fourth lunar month.
