The Penghu Great Bridge is 2,494 meters long, linking Baisha Island with Xiyu Island. It opened in 1996. The bridge deck sits about 10 meters above the sea, with observation walkways on both sides where you can look down at fishing boats passing through the Penghu Inner Sea and observe the tidal landforms below. It is the main road connection to Xiyu tourism.

Highlights of Penghu Great Bridge

The bridge connects Zhongtun on Baisha Island with Xiyu Island, replacing the boats that were previously the only way to cross. For local residents, this transformed daily mobility in a significant way. At nearly 2.5 km long, it is one of the main cross-sea bridges in Taiwan. Parking areas at both ends allow visitors to get out and walk onto the bridge.

An observation walkway runs along the outside of the bridge. Walking it, you look down at the water flowing around the bridge piers. The tidal range in the Penghu Inner Sea is pronounced: at low tide large areas of shallows and exposed reef are visible; at high tide the sea surface is smooth and open — the contrast between the two is striking. Wind on the bridge is usually strong, giving you a direct experience of Penghu's famously windy environment.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Visit

🚶
Walk Out onto the BridgeFrom the parking area at either the Baisha or Xiyu end, walk up onto the bridge. The walkway covers the full 2.5 km; you can walk partway and turn back — the best viewing point is the middle section, looking down over the Inner Sea.
🌊
Compare Tidal StatesAt low tide the reef and shallows below are exposed across a wide area; at high tide the surface is all water. You can observe this tidal change in landform directly from the bridge.
💨
Feel the Penghu WindThe bridge is completely exposed. Penghu's northeast or southwest monsoon winds can be stronger than expected out here — secure your hat and be mentally prepared for your hair.
📷
Dusk PhotographyThe western side of the bridge faces Xiyu. At dusk, light comes in from the west; the bridge reflection and the sea surface reflections are more pronounced during this window — a good time to photograph the bridge.
