The Penghu Great Bridge is 2,494 meters long, linking Baisha Island with Xiyu Island. It opened in 1996. The bridge deck sits about 10 meters above the sea, with observation walkways on both sides where you can look down at fishing boats passing through the Penghu Inner Sea and observe the tidal landforms below. It is the main road connection to Xiyu tourism.
Highlights of Penghu Great Bridge
The bridge connects Zhongtun on Baisha Island with Xiyu Island, replacing the boats that were previously the only way to cross. For local residents, this transformed daily mobility in a significant way. At nearly 2.5 km long, it is one of the main cross-sea bridges in Taiwan. Parking areas at both ends allow visitors to get out and walk onto the bridge.
An observation walkway runs along the outside of the bridge. Walking it, you look down at the water flowing around the bridge piers. The tidal range in the Penghu Inner Sea is pronounced: at low tide large areas of shallows and exposed reef are visible; at high tide the sea surface is smooth and open — the contrast between the two is striking. Wind on the bridge is usually strong, giving you a direct experience of Penghu's famously windy environment.
