Tiantai Mountain is approximately 52 meters above sea level — the highest point on Wang'an Island. A lookout platform at the summit provides a 360-degree unobstructed view. On clear days, the entire layout of Wang'an Island can be seen below, with the gaze extending to the surrounding sea; in good visibility, the outlines of nearby islands such as Qimei Island and Jiangjun Island can be seen in the distance. Agave plants are grown at the summit; in spring (approximately March to May), the agaves send up flower stalks and bloom, creating a unique island vegetation landscape particular to Wang'an. The summit walk is not long, but the panoramic reward is considerable.
Highlights of Tiantai Mountain
Tiantai Mountain is north of Wang'an Village; the trail winds from the foot of the hill to the summit, a total walking time of about 20 to 30 minutes. Along the trail you can observe Penghu's low shrubland vegetation and grassy terrain — a landscape entirely different from the mid-to-high elevation mountain environments of Taiwan's main island. The summit lookout platform is a two-level wooden structure with an unobstructed view: looking east you can see Wang'an Harbor and passing ships; looking south you can see the sea in the direction of Qimei Island; looking northwest you can make out the outlines of Jiangjun Island and other small outer islands.
Agave is an important vegetation element of Wang'an Island, widely planted across slopes and field ridges. Each agave plant blooms only once in its lifetime and dies after the blooming period; the flower stalks can reach several meters in height. In spring (March to May) when the agaves are in full bloom, the summit is surrounded by towering flower stalks and clusters of yellow blooms — a striking and unusual landscape. Visiting at sunrise or sunset provides the best light quality; the morning light facing east at sunrise and the evening glow on the western side each have their own character and can be chosen flexibly to fit the itinerary.
