Xiyu West Fort was built in the 12th year of the Guangxu reign (1886) under the supervision of Liu Mingchuan. It is the best-preserved Qing Dynasty Western-style bastion coastal defense fortification in Taiwan and is now a National Historic Site. Inside are a magazine, barracks, and an observation post; the gun embrasures face the sea, commanding the western sea lane of Penghu from high ground.
Highlights of Xiyu West Fort
Xiyu West Fort uses a Western bastion design with an irregular polygonal floor plan to maximize artillery firing angles and eliminate blind spots — a concrete result of introducing Western military engineering techniques during the late Qing Self-Strengthening Movement. The fort's stone walls are thick, with multiple gun embrasures facing the western sea, controlling the movement of vessels through Penghu's waterway.
The fort's interior preserves a magazine, barracks, and an observation post with a complete spatial layout. Visitors can enter each area to understand the operational logic of Qing Dynasty coastal defense. The battery sits at an elevated position; standing on the observation post and looking out over the western sea gives a sweeping view — the best place to feel the military geography of late Qing coastal defense. Interpretation signage is provided throughout; reading it alongside a tour is recommended.
