Houliao Heaven's Road (Tidal Sandbar Path)

An intertidal sand path that appears only at low tide — a walkway that exists only when the tide is out
📍 Penghu · Baisha Township · Houliao Village🏞️ Nature🔖 Intertidal Zone · Low-Tide Sand Path · Tidal Landscape

Heaven's Road in Houliao is an intertidal sand path that appears only when the tide recedes. Sea water flanks the sandy track on both sides, forming a walkable corridor that seems to lead toward a small island offshore. The path is only exposed during low-tide windows — confirm the day's tide times before going. Once the tide comes back in, the path disappears beneath the water.

Highlights of Houliao Heaven's Road

The intertidal sand path forms because of the shallow sea floor between Houliao Village's shore and the small island offshore — when the water level drops at low tide, the sandbar is exposed, creating a walkable path. Viewed from shore, the path has sea on both sides and looks like a straight corridor heading out to sea — a vivid display of tidal landform.

Heaven's Road is entirely controlled by the tides. Low-tide times vary every day, and the duration of the walkable window depends on the tidal range — sometimes the path is only exposed for 1–2 hours. Watch the ground underfoot while walking: the sand can vary between firm and soft, and some sections may be muddy. Wear shoes you don't mind getting wet. Respect the intertidal ecosystem — observe, do not collect or disturb marine life.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Visit

📅
Check the Tide Table Before You LeaveHeaven's Road can only be accessed around low tide. Use a tide forecast tool or app to find the day's lowest tide time, and build in buffer time to arrive early.
👟
Wear Wet-Friendly FootwearSome sections of the path may have standing water or soft mud. Sandals or amphibious shoes are better suited; avoid non-waterproof canvas shoes or leather shoes.
🦀
Observe the Intertidal EcosystemThe sand and reef exposed at low tide host crabs, shellfish, and other intertidal organisms. Observe and photograph — do not collect specimens or turn over rocks, so the habitat remains intact.
Watch Your Return TimeOnce the low-tide window closes, the path gradually floods. After walking to the far end of the path, keep track of time and head back well before the tide rises — do not stay on the small island so long that you cannot return.
