Sun Moon Lake Black Tea Story House

A century of Sun Moon Lake black tea — the journey from tea garden to teacup
📍 Nantou · Yuchi Township · Yuchi🎨 Cultural park🔖 Sun Moon Lake black tea · Assam cultivar · Tea garden experience

Yuchi Township is the core growing area of Sun Moon Lake black tea. During the Japanese colonial period, the Japanese successfully introduced the Indian Assam tea cultivar here, creating one of Taiwan's few high-altitude black tea industries. The Black Tea Story House uses displays and guided tours to introduce visitors to the history, production process, and varietal characteristics of Sun Moon Lake black tea, and offers tea tasting and purchasing. It is an important place to experience the local culture of Yuchi Township.

Highlights of Sun Moon Lake Black Tea Story House

The history of Sun Moon Lake black tea dates to the 1920s, when the Japanese selected Yuchi Township for its climate and soil and introduced the Assam cultivar for trial cultivation. They found that the area's distinctive mist and temperature fluctuations helped the tea develop a rich, full flavor. After Taiwan was restored to the Republic of China, Yuchi Township continued developing its black tea industry, and varieties such as Taiwan Tea No. 18 (Ruby Black Tea) have become internationally recognized representatives of Taiwanese black tea.

The Story House exhibits comprehensive knowledge of the black tea production process — from picking, withering, and rolling to fermentation and drying — with illustrated panels and physical materials, making it an approachable introduction to how black tea is made. In-house tasting lets visitors compare the flavor differences between varieties and processing methods, and a tea and tea-product shopping area provides a direct way to take home the terroir of Yuchi Township.
