Huisun Forest

NTU's experimental forest classroom — a vertical cross-section of Taiwan's ecosystems
📍 Nantou · Guoxing Township · Huisun🏞️ Nature🔖 NTU Experimental Forest · Vertical vegetation · Ecological trails

Huisun Forest is an experimental forest managed by National Taiwan University, covering approximately 7,477 hectares and spanning elevations from 450 meters to 2,419 meters. This range encompasses a complete vertical distribution of vegetation from low-elevation broadleaf forest to mid- and high-elevation conifer forest. The main activities are ecological education, agricultural experiences, and hiking trails. It is one of Taiwan's most intact preserved natural forest experimental areas.

Highlights of Huisun Forest

Because Huisun Forest belongs to NTU's experimental forest program and has been under long-term academic research protection, large tracts of natural broadleaf forest have been preserved and native plant diversity is high. The elevation difference of over 2,000 meters produces clearly defined vegetation layers — from low-elevation camphor and fig forest to mid-elevation oak woodland. Multiple well-maintained trails run through the forest, and farm facilities provide agricultural demonstrations.

The human history of Huisun Forest traces back to forestry development during the Japanese colonial period. The forest's name commemorates a scholar who made significant contributions to Taiwan's forestry. Overnight accommodation is available, allowing guests to spend the night in the forest — birdsong at dawn is the most natural alarm clock. The overall atmosphere is quieter than commercial scenic areas, making it ideal for visitors seeking an immersive natural experience.
