📍 Nantou · Zhongliao Township · Longyankelin🏞️ Nature🔖 Suspension bridge · Longfeng Waterfall · Ecological corridor

The Sky Ladder suspension bridge in Zhongliao Township is approximately 136 meters long, with the bridge deck about 40 meters above the valley floor. It spans a deep gorge in the Longyankelin area and is a representative facility of the ecotourism development that Zhongliao Township promoted after the 921 Earthquake. Nearby are Longfeng Waterfall and the Jiujiu Peak Nature Reserve, which are rich in natural ecological resources. Zhongliao Township was severely affected in the 921 Earthquake, and after reconstruction the township promoted ecotourism to rebuild the local economy; the Sky Ladder is a key attraction in this context.

Highlights of Sky Ladder Suspension Bridge (Longfeng Waterfall)

The Sky Ladder suspension bridge is hung by steel cables across the deep valley; the swaying of the bridge deck is noticeable, and walking across it you feel the visual impact of the height difference. The valley below is densely vegetated. Longfeng Waterfall is within reach via the trail — the waterfall is not particularly tall but has a steady flow and the valley ecology is intact. Jiujiu Peak Nature Reserve is famous for its unusual mountain formations (erosion has created dozens of aligned pointed peaks), a rare geological feature in Taiwan. It can be viewed from nearby viewpoints but entry into the reserve itself is restricted.

Zhongliao Township is a quiet, remote area with relatively low levels of tourist development and a more rustic atmosphere. The Sky Ladder trail is well-organized, with interpretive signage explaining the local ecology and the 921 reconstruction process. Longan (longyan) is an important agricultural product of Zhongliao Township; during the longan harvest season from August to September, longan-related farm produce is available for purchase in the township. The overall trail difficulty is low, with moderate gradients suited to visitors of average fitness. There is basic parking at the trailhead; driving is the most convenient way to get there.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Visit

🌉
Walk the bridge slowly to feel the swayThe key experience of the Sky Ladder suspension bridge is the feeling of suspension and swaying. Slow your pace, stand in the middle of the bridge, and look down at the valley floor — this is far more impactful than rushing across.
💦
The waterfall trail is worth completingThe Longfeng Waterfall trail is quieter than the bridge area with fewer visitors and more pristine streamside vegetation in the valley. If time allows, walking all the way to the base of the falls lets you feel the microclimate of the valley.
🏔️
Find the right spot to view Jiujiu PeakThe Jiujiu Peak formations are within a nature reserve, so they must be viewed from surrounding viewpoints. Look up the best viewing angles before you go; the outline of the peaks is clearest in full sunlight on a clear day.
🍈
August to September: longan harvest seasonZhongliao longan is harvested August to September; local farms sell fresh longan and dried longan (guiyuan), making this the best time for a seasonal local produce experience.
