Mangyuan National Forest Recreation Area is located in the mountains of Sansia District. The trail follows the stream upstream, passing in sequence through the two main waterfalls — Virgin Falls and Mangyuan Waterfall. The forest is predominantly natural broadleaf woodland with a high canopy cover, pleasantly cool in summer. In autumn (around November) the maples turn color, the park's main seasonal attraction, drawing leaf-viewing crowds each late autumn.
Highlights of Mangyuan Waterfall
The trail starts from the visitor center, following the stream on a well-maintained path. Reaching Virgin Falls takes about 40 minutes; continuing uphill for another 20 minutes leads to Mangyuan Waterfall. Virgin Falls has a larger drop and a concentrated flow; Mangyuan Waterfall has a wider curtain and lush surrounding vegetation. Both waterfalls have distinct characters — visiting both is recommended. The total elevation gain along the trail is about 300 meters, a moderate-intensity hike.
November's autumn maples are the peak season for the park. The red maple color is concentrated mainly along the middle section of the trail up to Mangyuan Waterfall, with Taiwan sweetgum as the primary species. In summer (June–August), stream water is more plentiful, the waterfall volume is high, and the trail is shady and cool — a popular destination for summer hiking to escape the heat. After rain the trail is slippery; take extra care on streamside rocks.
