Chengtian Temple is built into the hillside of Tucheng's hills, founded during the Guangxu reign of the Qing dynasty, and is one of the most visited Taoist temples in Greater Taipei. The temple buildings are stacked in tiers following the terrain, and the mountain path behind leads to Tung Blossom Park and Zhongyangjiian Mountain. Every year from April to May, the oil-tung trees bloom and white petals drift down the mountain path, forming a distinctive seasonal scene alongside the temple's incense smoke.

What to see at Chengtian Temple

Chengtian Temple was built during the Guangxu reign of the Qing dynasty, a hillside temple typical of the hill terrain on the south side of the Taipei Basin. The temple buildings are constructed in tiers following the slope; the main hall enshrines the principal deity, with wing rooms and colonnaded corridors on both sides, creating a sense of depth characteristic of mountain temples. The forecourt plaza offers a partial view toward Tucheng city and the Taipei Basin. Worshippers arrive steadily in the evening to burn incense.

The mountain path behind the temple is one starting point for the Tucheng Tung Blossom Park trail. The trail follows the ridgeline of the hills; oil-tung trees bloom profusely from April to May, with the flowering period concentrated in about two weeks. White five-petaled tung blossoms blanket the trail, a famous seasonal-only sight in northern Taiwan. Trail conditions are good; a round trip takes about 2 to 3 hours. In summer, forest canopy provides shade; in winter, the yellowing vegetation has its own appeal.

How to make the most of your visit

⛩️
Temple worship and architectural observationThe temple buildings arranged along the terrain are worth studying. The layout of worshipper pathways and the ritual spatial atmosphere reflect the typical format of Taiwan mountain temples.
🌸
Tung blossom trail (April to May)The trail is most popular when the oil-tung trees are in full bloom (roughly mid-April to early May). A weekday morning visit is recommended to avoid weekend crowds; the petals fall for only a short time, so timing matters.
🥾
Hiking to Zhongyangjiian MountainVisitors with enough energy can continue hiking from the rear of Chengtian Temple to Zhongyangjiian Mountain. The trail surface is mostly earth; wear hiking shoes and bring enough water.
🌄
View from the temple forecourtOn clear days, the forecourt plaza overlooks the Tucheng city area. The light angle in the evening is good for photographing the temple and basin scenery; incense lights occasionally illuminate the scene at night.
