Banqiao Lin Family Garden

Taiwan's most complete surviving Qing-dynasty Minnan private garden and building complex
📍 New Taipei · Banqiao Ximen Street🎨 Cultural district🔖 National historic site

The Lin Benyuan Garden Estate, commonly known as the Lin Family Garden, was built between 1853 and 1893 over three generations of the Banqiao Lin family, covering about 6,500 ping. The garden blends Minnan traditional architecture with Jiangnan garden design principles, with artificial rockeries, water pavilions, covered walkways, and a stage forming a complete private garden layout. It is among the best-preserved Qing-dynasty building complexes listed as a national historic site in Taiwan.

What to see at the Lin Family Garden

The Lin Benyuan family was the most representative landlord-and-merchant family in Qing-dynasty Taiwan. The Banqiao Lin family emigrated from Zhangzhou in Fujian and, over successive generations, built up wealth to construct their residence and garden. The surviving building complex includes major structures such as Dingjing Hall, Laiqing Pavilion, Xiangyu Pavilion, and Guanjia Tower. Each building has a different function and layout; the facade decorations are intricate, with Jiaozhi pottery, cut-and-paste mosaic, and wood carvings among the traditional crafts on display.

The garden's landscaping centers on the pond and rockery in front of Jigushushu (Study of Drawing from the Ancients). The rock stacking and water arrangement follow Chinese traditional garden philosophy; winding covered walkways guide the eye, and borrowed-scenery techniques give depth to the limited space. The garden has undergone restoration, and some architectural components are later repairs, but the overall layout faithfully reflects the spatial logic of a Qing-dynasty gentry garden. Opening hours and admission prices are subject to official website announcements.
