Taiwushan rises 253 meters above sea level, the highest point on Kinmen Island. The characters "毋忘在莒" (Do Not Forget Ju), in Chiang Kai-shek's handwriting, are carved into the summit rock face — the most politically and historically significant landscape marker on Kinmen. The area has hiking trails, with slopes covered by Casuarina and Acacia forest. Climbing to the summit offers a bird's-eye view of the island's entire outline and the surrounding waters.

Highlights of Kinmen National Park (Taiwushan Area)

Taiwushan is composed of granite. Although not particularly tall, it stands prominently above Kinmen's overall flat terrain, giving it significant military strategic importance; numerous military facility ruins are scattered across the hillside. The "毋忘在莒" inscription alludes to the story of Tian Dan's restoration of the Qi state in the Spring and Autumn period, a narrative that was given the political symbolism of retaking the mainland in the 1950s. Carved into the summit rock, the inscription has been preserved in good condition to this day.

The hiking trail extends from the base to the summit; the total distance is approximately 2 to 4 km depending on the route chosen, with moderate gradients manageable for most hikers. Rest points are set along the trail. Kinmen's native snakes (including some protected species) can occasionally be spotted in the forest. The summit view is wide open, and on clear days Xiamen can be seen in the distance.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Visit

🥾
Wear Appropriate FootwearSome sections of the trail have rocky surfaces. Wear sports shoes or hiking shoes with good grip. Do not wear sandals or flat-soled shoes on the mountain. Rocky surfaces are especially slippery when wet.
🌳
Learn About the Casuarina Windbreak ForestsThe large-scale Casuarina planting on Kinmen's hillsides is a result of post-war reforestation. These trees play an important role in wind protection and sand stabilization. Along the trail, you can observe the differences between Casuarina and Acacia growing environments.
🪨
See the Inscription in Person at the SummitThe "毋忘在莒" inscription is located on the summit rock face, with large and clearly legible characters. It is an important site for understanding the political atmosphere of wartime Kinmen. Spending time here to read the surrounding interpretation panels is recommended.
🌤️
On Clear Days the View Can Reach the Other ShoreOn a clear day, Xiamen can be seen from the summit. The full outline of Kinmen Island and Lieyu (Little Kinmen) are also clearly visible. Choose a day with good visibility for the summit climb.
