Beidou Dian'an Temple is the most important religious center in Beidou Township, with Tianshang Shengmu (Mazu) as the main deity. The temple's history can be traced back to the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty. The current temple structure has been rebuilt and expanded multiple times. The original Beidou Dian'an Temple building alongside it has been listed as a historic building, preserving the early platform foundations and forecourt layout. The coexistence of old and new makes this a concrete case study for understanding the historical evolution of temples in Taiwan.

What to see at Beidou Dian'an Temple

Dian'an Temple is situated at the center of Beidou Township and has served as the local religious hub since it was founded during the Qianlong reign. The existing temple structure is architecturally imposing, with elaborate cut-porcelain (jianzhan) ridge decorations. The "original Beidou Dian'an Temple" remnants beside it have been submitted for listing as a historic building and retain sections of stone-carved platform foundations and forecourt paving, clearly presenting the spatial layout of a Qing-dynasty temple. The side-by-side presence of old and new temple buildings is a distinctive human-cultural landmark unique to Beidou Township.

Beidou Dian'an Temple holds a grand temple fair around Mazu's birthday on the 23rd day of the 3rd lunar month each year, drawing worshippers from townships throughout southern Changhua. Traditional performance troupes — including Bajiajiang, dragon troupes, and lion troupes — perform throughout the festival. The forecourt and surrounding streets fill with activity. It is a good opportunity to observe southern and central Taiwan's temple festival culture.

Getting there & timing

  • Beidou has no train station. Take an intercity bus or drive; from Changhua City, head south on Provincial Highway 1 for about 30 minutes to reach the center of Beidou Township.
  • The temple is open year-round; daytime visits are recommended. During the temple fair season (3rd lunar month), traffic in the surrounding area is heavy — allow extra time to find parking.

Nearby connections

  • Hexing Temple in Pitou Township and Chenggong Inn in Xizhou Township are nearby; a southern Changhua historical and cultural day trip can be planned around all three.
  • About a 15-minute drive from the Zhutang Wetland Ecological Area, combining temple culture with a natural ecology itinerary is possible.
