Luodong Forestry Culture Park

Log storage ponds and narrow-gauge railway remnants — restoring the operating scale of the Taipingshan logging camp
📍 Yilan · Luodong Township · Zhongzheng North Road🎨 Cultural Park🔖 Forestry history · log storage ponds · narrow-gauge railway · logging remnants

Luodong Forestry Culture Park was formerly the log storage and processing base in Luodong for the Taipingshan logging camp during the Japanese colonial period. Large quantities of timber were transported from the mountains by rail to be stored in ponds here before being sent to processing plants. After logging operations ended, the industrial site was converted into a cultural park; the log storage ponds, narrow-gauge railway remnants, and warehouse building complex were preserved in place, becoming a tangible testament to the history of Yilan's forestry industry.

Highlights of Luodong Forestry Culture Park

The heart of the park is a series of interconnected log storage ponds with a wide water surface; paths along the pond edges allow visitors to walk beside the water. The ponds reflect the surrounding trees and buildings — one of the most frequently photographed scenes in the park. The surviving narrow-gauge timber-hauling vehicles and sections of track are displayed outdoors; full-scale logging machinery and steam log-haulers stand in static display, giving visitors a direct sense of the scale of forestry equipment.

The indoor exhibition hall focuses on the history of Yilan's forestry development, from the Japanese-era logging background and timber-transport systems to the impact of the forestry industry on the development of Luodong as a city — all clearly presented in text. The park is free to enter year-round and is one of the few public outdoor spaces in Luodong where you can spend an extended time; it also draws local residents for everyday use.
