Dadu Tableland sits on the western side of the Taichung Basin, a laterite gravel plateau rising to about 300 metres above sea level. The open edge of the plateau allows views on clear days over both Taichung city and the western coast. The plateau retains the character of Taiwan's hilly grassland scenery and serves as a natural spot for Taichung residents to take a walk and enjoy the view, as well as a good vantage point for observing Taichung's topographic structure.
Highlights of Dadu Tableland Viewpoint
Dadu Tableland is one of several laterite gravel plateaus on Taiwan's western side. Geologically it is a Pleistocene depositional terrace with thick laterite layers; surface vegetation is mostly grassland and scrub, a striking contrast to the urban landscape of the Taichung Basin below. The western edge of the plateau benefits from the elevation difference, offering broader views; on clear days you can look toward the mouth of the Dajia River.
Scattered rest and viewing facilities on the plateau draw Taichung residents for weekend walks. Because the plateau sits higher than the surrounding basin, wind speeds are generally stronger and the air circulates well, making early morning and evening temperatures comfortable. The tableland spans several administrative districts including Dadu, Longjing, and Shalu, with different entry points for each section; plan your parking spot before setting out.
