📍 Taichung · Wufeng District, Laiyuan Road⛩️ Historic Site & Temple🔖 National Historic Site

The Wufeng Lin family was one of the five great Qing-dynasty families of Taiwan. Their mansion complex was built in the mid-19th century and covers three main sections: the Upper Compound (Dingcuo), the Lower Compound (Xiacuo), and the Laiyuan Garden. The architecture blends southern Fujian tradition with Western decorative elements and is among the most complete surviving traditional Han Chinese architectural ensembles in Taiwan. Listed as a national historic site, it stands as testimony to the height of influence enjoyed by Taiwan's gentry families during the Qing period.

Highlights of Wufeng Lin Family Garden

The Wufeng Lin family rose to prominence during the Xianfeng reign of the Qing dynasty, accumulating great wealth through military merit and commerce, and the mansion complex was built over several decades. The complex is divided into three sections: the Upper Compound (associated with Lin Wenchao and Lin Chaodong), the Lower Compound (associated with Lin Dianguo), and the Laiyuan Garden. The layout is expansive, with one courtyard opening onto the next. Construction technique combines southern Fujianese tradition with some Western decorative elements; the woodcarving, brick carving, and jiannie mosaic tilework are all of the highest craftsmanship.

The 1999 Jiji earthquake (921 Earthquake) damaged parts of the complex, and a lengthy restoration process followed. The areas currently open to visitors continue to be adjusted; check the official access information before visiting. The Laiyuan Garden is a private garden of the Lin family — serene and graceful in its landscape. Historically it was a gathering place for literati and poets, and it has associations with Lin Xiantang, a leading figure of the Taiwan Legislative Petition Movement.
