Jianshan Fishing Village (Traditional Penghu Fishing Village Settlement)

A coral-stone fishing village still inhabited by residents — a living settlement at the northern end of Aimen Beach

Jianshan Fishing Village is a coastal settlement on the Huxi Township shoreline that retains the traditional Penghu fishing village character, with buildings primarily constructed from coral-stone walls, adjacent to the northern end of Aimen Beach. Unlike the uninhabited ancient houses of Huazhai Village on Wang'an, Jianshan Village still has residents living there who continue to engage in fishing activities — a living traditional Penghu fishing village where visitors can observe the authentic coexistence of traditional settlement space and contemporary fishing life.

Highlights of Jianshan Fishing Village

The architectural character of Jianshan Village is the same as most traditional Penghu settlements: coral reef stone (gu gu stone) stacked to form the outer walls, creating a thick, rough stone texture that is wind-resistant and thermally insulated. The village layout runs along the coast with narrow alleys forming natural wind channels. The fishing boats moored at the harbor, drying fishing nets and seafood, and the daily rhythms of the residents are the core observational value that distinguishes this settlement from a group of abandoned ancient houses — the 'living' quality on the timeline.

The settlement adjoins the northern end of Aimen Beach; walking from the village edge to the beach takes only a few minutes, creating a combined fishing-village-and-beach itinerary. A leisurely strolling pace through the settlement is recommended for observing the architectural details of the coral-stone buildings, the form of traditional doors and windows, and the arrangement of the courtyards — while being mindful to respect residents' living spaces by not casually photographing private courtyards or residents in the midst of their activities. If you encounter a local resident willing to chat, it is a rare opportunity to learn about the current state of fishing in Huxi Township.

How to make the most of it

🐟
Observe fishing activity in the early morningFishing boats typically head out or return in the early morning, and the harbor offers the most authentic scenes of fishing village labor. If you see a fisherman handling the catch, keep a polite distance and do not interfere with the work.
🪨
Close-up observation of coral-stone building detailsThe coral-stone masonry techniques of Jianshan Village's buildings can be compared with those of Huazhai Village, observing regional differences in stone selection, stacking methods, and joint treatment.
🚶
The walking route from village to beachTrails inside the village lead directly to the northern end of Aimen Beach. You can visit the fishing village first to experience its cultural atmosphere, then transition to the natural scenery of the beach — two contrasting experiences.
🤝
Respect residents' living spacesThe settlement is inhabited; when photographing, do not enter private courtyards or photograph residents without consent. Mutual respect between visitors and residents is the basic etiquette of any visit.
