Shanlinxi Forest Recreation Area

Cloud and mist in a sea of conifers — a different face every season

Shanlinxi Forest Recreation Area is located in Zhushan Township at an elevation of approximately 1,600 meters, characterized by extensive Japanese cedar and cryptomeria forests and a year-round misty climate. The park has several forest trails, with two major seasonal highlights: spring peony and tulip displays, and winter rime frost formations. The experience is similar in spirit to Xitou but distinctly different in atmosphere.

Highlights of Shanlinxi Forest Recreation Area

The name Shanlinxi comes from the large numbers of cedars planted throughout the area; the management has long cultivated a conifer landscape that, combined with native Taiwanese plants, creates rich layers of vegetation. At 1,600 meters, the mountain area is perpetually shrouded in mist and cooler and more humid than the lowlands, encouraging moss and ferns to grow on surrounding surfaces. The trails are rich with plant life and make for excellent nature observation.

In spring (roughly March to May), vast stretches of peonies and tulips bloom, their vivid colors creating a striking contrast against the green of the cedar forest — a high-altitude floral display rarely seen in Nantou. In winter, when temperatures drop, moisture condenses on branches to form rime frost (roughly December to February, weather-dependent), creating a rare natural ice-and-snow spectacle.

Making the most of your visit

🌺
Spring flower season (Mar – May)Peonies and tulips bloom among the cedars. Visit on a weekday to avoid crowds; check the park's flower-condition updates before heading out so you don't miss the bloom window.
❄️
Winter rime frost (Dec – Feb)Rime frost requires simultaneously low temperatures and high humidity, so sightings cannot be guaranteed. Monitor the park's weather reports and real-time updates to maximize your chances.
🌲
Forest bathing trail hikeThe trails wind through cedar forest thick with phytoncides. Slow down and savor the cool, moist air that is unique to conifer forests.

Plant life observationInterpretive signs along the trails identify native Taiwanese plants. Nature enthusiasts may want to bring a field guide to cross-reference what they see.

Practical information

Getting there and time needed

  • By car: from Zhushan Township, head toward Lugu and follow the Shanlinxi forest road up the mountain. The road is narrow and winding; mountain weather can change quickly — bring rain gear.
  • Shanlinxi is a privately managed park and requires a paid entry ticket. Opening hours and ticket prices are set by the operator — check the official website before visiting.
  • Allow half a day to a full day. If you're hoping to see rime frost or catch the flowers at peak bloom, staying overnight in the park gives you the best chance of perfect timing.

Nearby connections

  • Shanlinxi and Xitou Natural Education Area are both in Zhushan Township's mountain zone; a two-day, one-night trip can cover both, each offering a distinct forest experience.
  • Descending to Zhushan town, you can continue to Tianmu (Sky Ladder), Jiji Township, and other southern Nantou attractions — a mountain-to-lowland route.
