Songbailing is situated in the hills of Mingjian Township at an elevation of about 450 meters. It is one of the largest tea-growing areas in Taiwan, known for Songbai Changqing tea (Songbai Xian tea). Showtian Temple is the main temple on the ridge, enshrining Xuantian Shangdi (Supreme Emperor of the Dark Heaven) as the principal deity. The temple's architecture is grand, incense burns year-round, and the elevated position offers panoramic views over the Zhuoshui River watershed and the Yunlin and Changhua plains — on a clear day the view extends to distant mountain ridges.
Highlights of Showtian Temple, Songbailing
Showtian Temple is a large complex, with the main hall, rear hall, and side halls forming a complete layout. The interior carvings are intricate, and craft objects such as the cast-bronze incense burner are worth examining up close. The viewing platform in front of the temple forecourt provides an open vista across the Zhuoshui River watershed: the river here is broad and sweeping, with the Yunlin plain to the left and the Changhua plain to the right stretching to the horizon. On a clear day, layers of distant mountains are visible. Nearby tea gardens are extensive; the Songbailing tea area occupies terraced slopes from mid-hillside to the summit. The tea garden scenery is most complete during the spring and autumn harvest seasons (approximately March to April and October to November).
Several tea farmers on the ridge have direct-sales shops and tasting spaces where you can enjoy a cup of Songbai Xian tea while looking out over the plains below. Stalls around the temple sell incense, local agricultural produce, and souvenirs, creating a lively market atmosphere. The road up to Showtian Temple is winding; drivers should watch out for curves. On weekends and major festival days, the temple forecourt and parking area fill up quickly — visiting on a weekday is a more relaxed experience.
