Shiding Old Street developed along both banks of a tributary of the Jingmei River. Some buildings are raised on wooden walkways above the river, forming a rare waterside stilt-house settlement in Taiwan. During the Qing dynasty, Shiding was an important distribution hub for tea and coal; at its peak it was lined with commercial establishments. As water transport declined, most of the old street's original building layout was preserved, and it is now protected as a cultural heritage site by New Taipei City.
Highlights of Shiding Old Street
The heart of the old street is a narrow stone-paved lane flanked by southern Fujian-style brick-and-timber shophouses. Some buildings extend along the riverbank, supported on wooden walkways hovering above the water; looking up from the riverbed, you can see the wooden understructure. The old street is not large — the main street is about 200 meters long and easy to walk in full. The valley topography makes the street feel quiet and compact.
Shiding tofu is a local specialty; several tofu shops along the old street focus on stinky tofu and tofu dishes — an extension of the same food culture as Deep Pit (Shenkeng) stinky tofu from the same area. The riverbank beside the old street has a walking path; in clear weather the shallow stream allows close observation of streambed ecology. Some mountain trails within Shiding connect through to the Thousand Island Lake viewpoint; energetic visitors can hike between the two.

- The old street is open at all times with no entry fee. Individual shop opening hours vary; more shops are open on weekends.
Nearby connections
- Shenkeng Old Street is about a 15-minute drive from Shiding; Shenkeng is even more famous for stinky tofu — combining both old streets makes for an interesting comparison.
- From Shiding, heading toward Bishan Road leads to the Thousand Island Lake viewpoint; a self-drive combining Shiding Old Street and Thousand Island Lake is a complete Shiding day route.
