The Japanese wooden school buildings at Yuanli Shanjiao Elementary School were constructed in the 1930s and are among the few fully preserved Japanese-era school structures in Miaoli County, now designated a county historic site. Horizontal weatherboard exterior walls and a hip-and-gable roof are the building's defining architectural features; the interior also displays Yuanli's rush weaving culture, giving the site dual value as both architectural history and local craft heritage.
Highlights of Yuanli Shanjiao Elementary School Japanese-Era Buildings
The school buildings use horizontal weatherboard (vertical board exterior wall) construction paired with a Japanese hip-and-gable roof. The pitch and eave proportions faithfully represent the standard form of Japanese-era school architecture. The building complex is in good condition — the exterior boards have been maintained and repainted, and the overall space retains its original school layout, making it one of the few fully intact Japanese-era school examples in central Taiwan.
The interior space currently displays cultural artifacts related to rush weaving, explaining the history of the industry in Yuanli — where triangular-stem rushes (san jiao lin) were woven into hats and mats. The industry peaked during the Japanese colonial era and the early Republic of China period, with exports reaching Japan and Southeast Asia. The display uses actual objects, photographs, and text; combined with the Taiwan Rush Weaving Cultural Center elsewhere in the township, it forms an in-depth local craft-themed route.
