Rongyuan Banyan Grove is home to dozens of banyan trees more than a hundred years old. Their aerial roots hang down from the branches, take root in the ground, and thicken into pillar-like secondary trunks; the canopies of adjacent trees overlap and merge, so that walking among them feels like passing through a natural green corridor. This banyan forest is one of the few recreational areas within Kinmen National Park where the plant landscape is the main attraction, and its quiet atmosphere stands in clear contrast to Kinmen's many war-history sites.
Highlights of Rongyuan Banyan Grove
The grove is located within Jinsha Township, adjacent to Jinsha Reservoir, and falls under the administration of Kinmen National Park. The most remarkable feature of the old banyan trees is their extensive aerial root systems: roots grow downward from the branches, lignify upon reaching the ground, and swell into secondary trunks that share the load of supporting the canopy alongside the main trunk — a single banyan can thus spread across an area of dozens of ping, making it impossible to tell where one tree ends and another begins.
The grove has trails and interpretive signs describing the ecological habits of banyan trees and the plant environment of Kinmen. Banyans are evergreen and maintain dense canopies year-round; in summer the shade is excellent, making this a comfortable spot to rest and cool down. The proximity of Jinsha Reservoir draws water birds such as egrets to the area, so the grove is good for observing both plants and birds.
How to make the most of your visit
Practical information
Getting there and timing
- Rongyuan Banyan Grove is on Rongyuan Road in Jinsha Township, about 5 minutes by car from the Jinsha Township town center. There is a car park that accommodates both scooters and cars.
- The grove is open all day with no admission fee. Morning or late afternoon visits are recommended; midday sun is strong but the tree canopy still provides comfortable shade. In summer, mosquitoes are more active — bring insect repellent.
Nearby connections
- Can be combined with Bishan Village — about 10 minutes southwest by car — for a half-day covering both natural plant scenery and traditional architecture.
- The Xu family Western-style house (Xipuhtou) in Jinsha Township can also be included on the same day, building a full-day route that pairs Jinsha Township's cultural and natural highlights.
