British Consulate at Takao

Taiwan's oldest surviving European-style building, perched at a commanding viewpoint over the harbor
📍 Kaohsiung · Gushan District, Gushan 1st Road⛩️ Historic sites & temples🔖 National Historic Site · British colonial villa · Kaohsiung Harbor panorama

The British Consulate at Takao Cultural Park comprises two buildings: the hilltop residence completed in 1865 and the consulate building below the hill dating from 1879 — together they form one of the oldest surviving European-style structures in Taiwan. Both are designated National Historic Sites. Standing on the terrace of the hilltop residence, visitors take in a sweeping panorama of Kaohsiung Harbor, Qijin Peninsula, and the waters of the strait.

Highlights of the British Consulate at Takao

The hilltop residence was built in 1865 as the living quarters for the British consul; its external corridor and veranda are constructed with red brick arched colonnades in a style typical of tropical colonial architecture. The consulate building below the hill, built in 1879 for official use, has a cleaner facade than the residence. Both buildings have undergone several restorations and now function as museum exhibition spaces, with interiors that recreate glimpses of 19th-century British diplomatic life.

The terrace of the hilltop residence offers one of the best elevated views of the harbor in all of Kaohsiung: directly ahead is the main channel of Kaohsiung Harbor; the Qijin coastline and Sizihwan Beach are clearly visible in the distance; massive cargo ships pass below at eye level. As evening falls, the harbor turns orange — this is one of the classic spots for photographing the harbor at sunset, drawing large numbers of photographers.

How to make the most of your visit

🌇
Reach the terrace before sunsetArrive at the terrace 30 minutes before sunset to claim a good spot; the light over the harbor is at its most layered just as the sun drops into the Taiwan Strait, making this one of the best sunset photography locations in Kaohsiung.
🏛️
Study the red brick arch details up closeThe bonding pattern and proportions of the red brick arches along the corridor are typical of British colonial architecture; up close, you can see the fine craftsmanship in the mortar joints.
📜
Use the exhibits to learn the history of the Port of TakaoThe museum displays cover the 19th-century opening of the Port of Takao (today's Kaohsiung Harbor) to trade, anchoring the architectural space in its historical context and significantly deepening the visit.
🚶
Walk the trail connecting the hilltop residence and the lower consulateThe hilltop residence and the consulate below are linked by a footpath; the walk downhill takes about 10 minutes, and the architectural contrast between the two buildings is clear — visiting both together gives the fullest picture.
