Daya District is one of the few areas in Taiwan that still maintains wheat cultivation. Each year around February to March, the ripening wheat turns a deep golden color across the open Taichung plain, creating a rare agricultural landscape. These fields are not a purpose-built tourist attraction but part of the community's everyday agricultural production — please respect the crops and do not walk into the fields.
Highlights of Daya Wheat Fields
Taiwan's climate is generally hot and humid, and the cool, dry winters that wheat requires are not common across the island. Daya, situated on the northern edge of the Taichung basin where the climate is relatively cool and dry, is one of the few agricultural areas in the country that has maintained its wheat-growing tradition. Wheat is typically sown in late autumn; it puts out heads and turns yellow in late winter to early spring, reaching its best visual state from late February to early March, after which it is harvested and the cycle begins again.
Daya wheat is locally processed and supplied to specific food industries in Taiwan. Some farms also offer agricultural experience activities, letting visitors follow the production process from sowing to milling. The best vantage points for photographing the wheat fields are usually the roads along field edges or observation platforms at farms that provide them. Photographers are advised to visit in the early morning for sidelight or at dusk for backlighting — angled light best captures the texture of the waving stalks.
