Zuoying Old City Chenghuang Temple was built during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing dynasty and has served as the spiritual core of the old Fengshan County Seat for over three hundred years. The temple preserves ancient stone inscriptions from the Qing dynasty, along with fine wood carvings and stone carvings. The square in front of the temple is the most important public space in the Zuoying old settlement, and the surrounding remnants of the old city walls form a historical cultural cluster.
Highlights of Zuoying Old City Chenghuang Temple
The old Fengshan County Seat (present-day Zuoying) was established in the 23rd year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing dynasty (1684). The Chenghuang Temple was built around the same time — a religious institution present from the county's founding — and has survived to the present through multiple restorations. The temple enshrines the City God (Chenghuang Ye), a deity of local governance and folk judicial belief, and worshippers gather during major festivals. Several ancient Qing-era stone inscriptions preserved inside the temple are invaluable historical records of the old county seat.
The temple's architectural craftsmanship is refined, with jianzhan (ceramic shard mosaic) ridge decorations and wood and stone carvings that showcase the artisan skills of southern Taiwan in the Qing era. The ancient stone pavement in the temple forecourt is understated and dignified, and the surrounding old-settlement buildings carry the traces of different eras. The Zuoying Old City walls (Old Fengshan Seat National Historical Site) are within walking distance and can be visited alongside the temple. The temple maintains a strong local faith tradition; even on non-festival days, local residents come to pay their respects, giving it an authentic temple atmosphere.
