Tianliao Moon World Geopark

Badland mudstone erosion landscape, a desert wilderness with the richest colors at sunset
📍 Kaohsiung · Tianliao District, Moon World🏞️ Nature🔖 Badland Topography · Mudstone Erosion

Tianliao Moon World is the most intact and extensive badland terrain in Taiwan. Mudstone (grey-green argillite) eroded by rain over many years has formed a landscape of bare, rugged hills that resemble the surface of the moon when viewed from a distance. The soil is highly saline and sticky, with extremely sparse vegetation. When the setting sun rakes across the mudstone hillsides at dusk, the orange-red tones layer in richly — the most visually striking natural landscape in the Kaohsiung area.

Highlights of Tianliao Moon World Geopark

Tianliao Moon World Geopark is located in Tianliao District, Kaohsiung. The badland terrain was formed by differential erosion of Miocene mudstone (commonly called grey-green argillite): in the rainy season the mudstone swells and softens on contact with water; in the dry season it contracts and cracks. This ongoing cycle produces smooth mirror-like mudstone slopes and sharp-ridged gullies. The extremely high salt content of the surface prevents most plants from growing; only a few salt-tolerant species appear here and there.

The park has viewing platforms and wooden boardwalks for safe close-up viewing of the mudstone terrain. The color of the mudstone shifts with moisture and light — grey-white when dry on a sunny day, turning deep grey-blue-green after rain. At sunset, when orange light strikes the hillsides at a low angle, the range of tones is at its richest, making it the universally recognized best time for photographers to visit. Mud volcanoes (gas-venting landscape features) can also be found in the Tianliao area.

How to Make the Most of Your Visit

🌇
Sunset PhotographyArrive an hour before dusk. The low angle of the setting sun is ideal, with the mudstone turning warm orange-red — the golden hour for badland photography.
☀️
Avoid Entering After RainAfter heavy rain the mudstone surface is wet and extremely difficult to walk on, with a risk of sinking. Visit only in dry weather and stay on the wooden boardwalks.
🌡️
Summer Sun ProtectionMoon World has no shade. Summer sun is intense; avoid the midday window from 11:00 to 15:00 and bring plenty of water.
🔥
Add a Mud Volcano StopMud volcanoes appear at several spots around Tianliao. Ask locals for directions and incorporate them into your visit to enrich the geological itinerary.

Practical Information

Getting There & Timing

  • From Kaohsiung city center, take Provincial Highway 28 toward Tianliao — about 50 minutes by car. Public transport options are very limited; driving is strongly recommended.
  • The geopark car park is free. The trails are open year-round with no admission fee; viewing platform facilities are basic.
  • After rain or typhoons the roads can be muddy; watch for skidding, and do not enter the badland trails until conditions are dry.

Nearby Connections

  • Combine with Yanchao Wushanping Mud Volcano Nature Reserve, which shares the same badland belt as Tianliao — together they make a half-day Kaohsiung geology theme trip.
  • On the way back, stop in Qishan town for a meal. Qishan Old Street and banana culture are an easy, pleasant add-on along the route.
