The farmland ponds and irrigation waterways of Tianliao Yang in Hunei District attract large flocks of migratory birds from October to April each year. Sandpipers, plovers, waterfowl, and herons congregate here, creating a rare migratory bird landscape uncommon on the Kaohsiung plain. The county road corridor serves as an informal hotspot for observing migratory birds.
Highlights of Hunei Wetland Wild Bird Sanctuary
Hunei's Tianliao Yang is an important staging and wintering ground for migratory birds in southern Taiwan's agricultural wetlands. The terrain is a mosaic of paddy fields, farm ponds, and aquaculture pools. During the winter migration season, Kentish plovers, common sandpipers, great egrets, little egrets, and various duck species share the habitat; in some years, rare vagrant birds have also been spotted. The traditional agricultural landscape naturally creates shallow-water foraging environments that have become irreplaceable bird habitats.
Birdwatching here mainly involves slow driving or parking along the county road for observation. There are no fixed viewing platforms, so bring your own binoculars and field guide. The two hours after sunrise and the hour before sunset are peak periods for migratory bird activity. Visitors are encouraged to move quietly throughout — no honking, no chasing birds — to maintain a calm resting environment for wildlife.
