Taoyuan District has the largest concentration of Bunun people among Kaohsiung's administrative districts; Qinhe Tribe preserves the traditional Pasibutbut polyphonic music and hunting ceremony culture. The upper Laonong River gorge presents its most dramatic mountain landscape here; the cool summer climate and river trekking environment allow cultural exploration and natural experience to go hand in hand.
Highlights of Taoyuan Qinhe Tribe
Taoyuan District was formerly known as 'Bunun Township'; various Bunun communities within its boundaries preserve traditional seasonal ceremonies, represented by the Millet Festival and the Ear-Shooting Ceremony. Qinhe Tribe is known for its Pasibutbut music — an unaccompanied choral tradition of the Bunun people for praying for a good millet harvest; its tonal structure holds scholarly interest in musicology. The tribe also preserves traditional hunter knowledge and mountain forest culture.
The gorge scenery becomes even more secluded from the upper Laonong River to the Taoyuan stretch: the canyon walls on both sides rise steeply, and the water runs clear — suitable for river rafting and canyoning (advance booking with a local operator required; do not enter the river during flood season). Taoyuan sits at approximately 500 to 700 meters above sea level, with summer temperatures 5 to 8 degrees cooler than lower areas — excellent for escaping the heat. Before entering a tribe, it is advisable to contact local cultural guides through official channels to avoid disrupting residents' daily lives.
How to make the most of your visit
Practical information
Getting there & hours
- From Kaohsiung city center, take Provincial Highway 27A through Liugui and continue deeper into the mountains — the full journey is about 1.5 to 2 hours. Public transport is extremely infrequent; driving is strongly recommended.
- Mountain roads in the area may be closed during typhoon season and high-water periods — check the Freeway Bureau road condition information and indigenous area access regulations before setting out.
- Tribal cultural activity schedules are announced by the Taoyuan District Office or tribal members; do not assume access is available without checking.
Nearby connections
- On the return journey, you can stop at the Laonong River Gorge and Eighteen Arhats Mountain in Liugui, linking up a full-day ecology and culture itinerary in the Kaohsiung mountain area.
- Maolin Duona Tribe is also in the vicinity; visiting both requires two days, as each tribe has a distinct cultural background — a separate in-depth visit to each is recommended.
