Duona Village is one of the best-preserved Rukai traditional slate house settlements, with stone architecture built into the hillside that demonstrates the building wisdom of the Austronesian peoples. The Maolin National Scenic Area draws tens of millions of purple crow butterflies to the valley lowlands to overwinter each year from November through March, creating a spectacular purple butterfly valley — a natural spectacle unique to Taiwan.
Highlights of Maolin Duona
Duona Tribe belongs to the霧台 branch of the Rukai people, using local slate to construct houses, granaries, and walls, forming a hillside slate house settlement. The village preserves traditional carved hundred-pace snake totems and glass bead craftsmanship; tribal elders continue to pass down oral history and ceremonial knowledge. Visitors are advised to inquire about the local reception protocol before entering the tribe, and to respect the residents' living space. The Maolin Gorge was carved by a tributary of the Laonong River and features deeply dramatic scenery.
Each winter (approximately November through March), large numbers of purple crow butterflies cross the Central Mountain Range and choose the valley of Maolin Gorge as their overwintering habitat; the gorge fills with massed butterflies, branches draped in wings — a phenomenon known as the 'purple butterfly valley' (Zidieyugu). Maolin National Scenic Area also has hot spring facilities; a soak can serve as a relaxing finale to the day's itinerary.
