An important migratory bird staging ground in Luzhu, where black-faced spoonbills make their winter stopover
📍 Kaohsiung · Luzhu District, Luzhu urban area🏞️ Nature🔖 Black-faced spoonbill · Migratory bird wetland · Winter birdwatching

Luzhu District has a well-developed wetland conservation area that serves as an important staging ground on the migratory bird flyway heading south; each winter, black-faced spoonbills, sandpipers, plovers, and various herons can be observed here. Well-equipped birdwatching trails and observation platforms allow visitors to watch the rare migratory spectacle from a safe distance without disturbing the birds.

Highlights of Luzhu Science Park Ecological Wetland

The Luzhu Wetland sits on Kaohsiung's coastal plain, immediately adjacent to the Science-Based Industrial Park — their coexistence is itself a reflection of the realities of land use in Taiwan. The wetland vegetation is dominated by marshes and shallow ponds, providing abundant food sources for migratory birds. October through April is the peak migratory season; the rare black-faced spoonbill regularly stops here to forage, making it one of the few places in southern Taiwan where this species can be reliably observed.

The wetland features wooden boardwalk observation trails and several viewing platforms with unobstructed sightlines that do not disturb bird habitats. Dawn and dusk are when bird activity is most intense and lighting conditions are most suitable for photography. Even outside the migratory season, resident and breeding waterbirds are present in spring and summer, offering year-round opportunities for wildlife observation.

How to make the most of your visit

🦢
Black-faced spoonbill watching (October – April)The winter migratory season is the best period for birdwatching; black-faced spoonbills are most active foraging from early morning through mid-morning — bring 8–10× binoculars or a telephoto lens.
🌅
Early morning for the best lightBird activity is frequent at dawn; whether shooting silhouettes in backlight or detailed shots in front light, early morning offers the richest photographic opportunities.
📖
Bring a Taiwan waterbird field guideThe wetland hosts a wide variety of birds — a Taiwan waterbird field guide, used alongside the interpretive signs, helps identify more common and rare species.
🤫
Stay quiet and avoid startling the birdsSpeak softly and avoid sudden movements when observing; sensitive species like the black-faced spoonbill, once disturbed and flushed, may take considerable time to return.
