Fo Guang Shan was founded by Master Hsing Yun in 1967 on the hillsides of Dashu, and is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan. The complex features magnificent halls and a grand Great Buddha Plaza; the Buddha Memorial Center, completed in 2011, has become a pilgrimage and cultural destination with museum-caliber resources, attracting believers and general visitors from around the world every year.

Highlights of Fo Guang Shan

The Fo Guang Shan complex covers a vast area. Major structures include the Main Shrine (Daxiong Baodian), the Hall of Great Compassion, the Gate of Non-Duality, and the Great Buddha Plaza. Imposing Buddha statues stand at the front of the Great Buddha Plaza, with surrounding hall corridors forming a grand, symmetrical layout. The Buddha Memorial Center was designed by architect Kris Yao and blends ancient Indian Buddhist architectural vocabulary with modern construction methods. Its main hall enshrines a Buddha tooth relic and houses a rich collection of Buddhist artifacts.

Fo Guang Shan is open to the general public — you do not need to be a Buddhist to visit. Guided tour services explain the philosophy of Humanistic Buddhism and the significance of each hall. The Buddha Memorial Center features permanent and special exhibitions covering Buddhist art, Master Hsing Yun's writings, and information on Fo Guang Shan branch monasteries worldwide, making it an important resource for religious and cultural study.
