Weiwuying National Performing Arts Center opened in 2018, drawing design inspiration from the banyan tree canopy. Its white curved roof envelops four venues — an opera house, concert hall, playhouse, and recital hall — under a single continuous structure, setting a record as the largest single-roof performing arts building in Asia. The architecture itself is a work of art worth contemplating, and the surrounding public spaces are open to the public all day.
Highlights of Weiwuying National Performing Arts Center
The site of Weiwuying National Performing Arts Center was formerly the Weiwuying Army base. Redevelopment as a cultural park began in 2012; the complex was designed by Dutch architect Francine Houben and officially opened in October 2018. The white curved exterior shell is conceived around the idea of a 'Banyan Plaza,' with the roof's organic curves mimicking the canopy of the old banyan trees common in southern Taiwan — a landmark moment in Kaohsiung's architectural history.
The center houses a 2,260-seat opera house, a 2,000-seat concert hall, a 1,254-seat playhouse, and a 434-seat recital hall, attracting a large number of leading international performing groups each year with regular international opera, classical music, contemporary dance, and theater programs. The exterior Banyan Plaza and surrounding walkways are open all day; public art installations are scattered throughout the grounds, making a walk around the outside of the building worthwhile even without buying a ticket.
